Haines City FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Most work in Haines City FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Haines City FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Haines City FL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Haines City FLAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Haines City FL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Haines City home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Haines City FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Haines City FL area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Haines City FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Haines City FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Haines City healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Haines City FL residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Haines City FL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Haines City, Florida

Haines City is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. Its population was 13,174 at the 2000 census and 20,535 at the 2010 census.[5] It is the third most populous city in Polk County. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area, which, in turn, is considered part of the Tampa Bay Area.

Haines City was platted in 1885, shortly after the South Florida Railroad reached the area.[6] The city was first known as Clay Cut, but there was no railroad station. It is said that the inhabitants persuaded the railroad company to build a station by agreeing to rename their city Haines City, to honor a senior railroad official, Colonel Henry Haines.[7]

The City of Haines City was originally incorporated under the General Statutes of Florida as the Town of Haines City on February 23, 1914. The first state legislative act affecting the City was enacted on May 20, 1919, and, by Chapter 8272,[8] it was reincorporated under a Mayor-Council form of government. The present charter was adopted as Chapter 12790 on July 1, 1927, changing the form of government to “Commission-Manager Plan,” as amended. The City operates under a commission-manager form of government and provides the following services as authorized by its charter: Public safety (Police and Fire), Streets and Highways, Culture-Recreation, Public Improvements, Sanitation, Planning and Zoning and General and Administrative Services.[9]
