Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Lithia FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Lithia FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Lithia FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Lithia FL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Lithia FLAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Lithia FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Lithia home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Lithia FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Lithia FL area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Lithia FL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Lithia FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Lithia health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Lithia FL home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lithia FL area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
