Sonographer Work Summary

Osprey FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Osprey FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Osprey FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Osprey FL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Osprey FLAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Osprey FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Osprey home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonography program you are looking at, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Osprey FL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Osprey FL area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Osprey FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Osprey FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Osprey medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Osprey FL home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Osprey FL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
