Sonographer Occupation Summary

Sopchoppy FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Sopchoppy FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Sopchoppy FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Sopchoppy FL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Sopchoppy FLAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Sopchoppy FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Sopchoppy home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Sopchoppy FL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Sopchoppy FL area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Sopchoppy FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Sopchoppy FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Sopchoppy medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Sopchoppy FL residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Sopchoppy FL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Sopchoppy, Florida

Sopchoppy is a city in Wakulla County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Tallahassee, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 457 at the 2010 census. As of 2017[update], the population was estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau to be 465.[5]Ochlockonee River State Park is nearby.

Sopchoppy came into existence in 1894 after the CT&G Railroad Company built a railway through the area. It platted the town on property it already owned in the area, across the river from Greenough. To encourage people to settle the area, the railroad engaged in an advertising campaign, exaggerating the quality of the soil and climate.[8]

The Soochoppy Depot was built in 1891. Now a museum, it was built for the Carrabelle, Tallahassee & Georgia Railroad (G. F. & A.), and referred to colloquially as the Gopher, Frog & Alligator, Company, which was absorbed by the Georgia, Florida and Alabama Railroad. The line began in 1893 and closed in 1946. It transported lumber, turpentine and related products, honey, farm produce, soldiers, fish and oysters packed in barrels in ice as well as sturgeon caviar from the Sopchoppy River, frog legs, and catfish.[9]
