Sonographer Job Summary

Yulee FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Yulee FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Yulee FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Yulee FL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Yulee FLAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Yulee FL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Yulee home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Yulee FL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Yulee FL area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Yulee FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Yulee FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Yulee health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Yulee FL home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Yulee FL area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
