Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Shady Dale GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Shady Dale GA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Shady Dale GA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Shady Dale GA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Georgia or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Shady Dale GAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Shady Dale GA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Shady Dale home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Shady Dale GA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Shady Dale GA area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Shady Dale GA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Shady Dale GA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Shady Dale health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Shady Dale GA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Shady Dale GA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
