Sonogram Tech Work Description

Keaau HI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Keaau HI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Keaau HI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Keaau HI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Hawaii or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Keaau HIAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Keaau HI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Keaau home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Keaau HI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Keaau HI area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Keaau HI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Keaau HI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Keaau health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Hawaii healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Keaau HI residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Keaau HI area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
