Sonographer Job Description

Essex IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Essex IL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Essex IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Essex IL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Essex ILAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Essex IL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Essex home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Essex IL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Essex IL area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Essex IL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Essex IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Essex health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Essex IL home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Essex IL area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
