Sonographer Occupation Summary

Madison IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Madison IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Madison IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Madison IL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Illinois or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Madison ILAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Madison IL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Madison home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Madison IL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Madison IL area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Madison IL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Madison IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Madison medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Madison IL home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Madison IL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
