Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Wadsworth IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Wadsworth IL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Wadsworth IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Wadsworth IL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Wadsworth ILAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Wadsworth IL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Wadsworth home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Wadsworth IL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Wadsworth IL area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Wadsworth IL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Wadsworth IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Wadsworth medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Wadsworth IL residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wadsworth IL area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
