Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Guernsey IA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Guernsey IA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable

  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Guernsey IA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Guernsey IA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Iowa or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Guernsey IAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Guernsey IA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Guernsey home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Guernsey IA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Guernsey IA area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Guernsey IA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have associations with Guernsey IA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Guernsey health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Iowa healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Guernsey IA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Guernsey IA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
