Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Effingham KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Effingham KS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Effingham KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Effingham KS hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Effingham KSAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Effingham KS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Effingham home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Effingham KS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Effingham KS area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Effingham KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Effingham KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Effingham health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Effingham KS residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Effingham KS area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
