Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Glenview KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Glenview KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Glenview KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Glenview KY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Glenview KYAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Glenview KY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Glenview home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Glenview KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Glenview KY area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Glenview KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Glenview KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Glenview healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Glenview KY home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Glenview KY area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Glenview, Kentucky

5,000 acres (20 km2) of the surrounding land were originally owned by James Smalley Bate and named "Berry Hill" for his former Virginia home. The estate was purchased in 1868 by meat packer James C. McFerran. McFerran's horse farm was named "Glen View". After his death in 1885, John E. Green acquired the farm and renamed it "Glenview Stock Farm". The community received its post office on May 11, 1893.[4]

In the late 19th century, wealthy families from Louisville began moving east to build summer homes in communities such as Anchorage. Some of these eventually became full-time residences. Early residents of Glenview cooperated with other communities to open the Louisville, Harrods Creek and Westport Railroad in 1877, a commuter rail line in use until its abandonment in the 1950s. Some of Louisville's most influential families, including the Binghams, the Ballards, and the Belknaps, moved into the area after the opening of the railroad.[5] Some developers have played off Glenview's reputation, establishing similarly-named communities at Glenview Manor and Glenview Hills in the 1960s and 70s.

Louisville attempted to annex Glenview in 1983, which prompted its residents to seek a separate incorporation from the state legislature. This was granted in 1985.[6] Many of the houses are part of the Glenview Historic District, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
