Sparta KY sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Sparta KY, the next step is to start the process of picking a college. To begin with, you need to find the right program that will provide the proper education to become a qualified professional. And because some states do mandate that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s very important that you investigate each school in order to evaluate and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? A number of students will start by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location should be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifications will be covered more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online training programs that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Sparta KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Sparta KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Sparta KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Sparta KY clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Sparta KYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Sparta KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Sparta home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer program you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Sparta KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Sparta KY area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Sparta KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Sparta KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Sparta healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Sparta KY home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Sparta KY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
