Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Wooton KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Wooton KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Wooton KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Wooton KY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Wooton KYAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Wooton KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Wooton home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are considering, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Wooton KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Wooton KY area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Wooton KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with Wooton KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Wooton health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Wooton KY residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wooton KY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
