Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Farmland LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Farmland LA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Farmland LA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Farmland LA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Louisiana or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Farmland LAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Farmland LA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Farmland home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Farmland LA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Farmland LA area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Farmland LA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Farmland LA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Farmland medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Farmland LA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Farmland LA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
