Innis LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Innis LA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Innis LA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Innis LA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Louisiana or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Innis LAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Innis LA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Innis home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Innis LA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Innis LA area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Innis LA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Innis LA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Innis health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Innis LA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Innis LA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
