Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Slaughter LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Slaughter LA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Slaughter LA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Slaughter LA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Louisiana or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Slaughter LAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Slaughter LA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Slaughter home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Slaughter LA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Slaughter LA area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Slaughter LA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with Slaughter LA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Slaughter healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Slaughter LA residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Slaughter LA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
