Sonogram Tech Work Summary

West Monroe LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in West Monroe LA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

West Monroe LA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through West Monroe LA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Louisiana or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in West Monroe LAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local West Monroe LA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your West Monroe home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask West Monroe LA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the West Monroe LA area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of West Monroe LA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with West Monroe LA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the West Monroe medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their West Monroe LA home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the West Monroe LA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    West Monroe, Louisiana

West Monroe is a city in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is situated on the Ouachita River, across from the neighboring city of Monroe. The two cities are often referred to as the Twin Cities of northeast Louisiana. Its population was 13,065 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The mayor is Staci Albritton Mitchell.

Originally laid out in 1837 as Byron by John Campbell at the foot of the ferry landing to Monroe, the town floundered and Campbell went bankrupt. The area was bought by Christopher Dabbs, a doctor from Virginia who submitted the plans for Cotton Port in 1854; it was officially recognized in 1859. It too languished until the arrival of the Vicksburg, Shreveport, & Texas Railroad and the construction of the bridge over the Ouachita. Cotton Port boomed as a river port and rail depot.[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.0 square miles (20.6 km²), of which 7.7 square miles (20.0 km²) is land and 0.2 square mile (0.6 km²) (3.14%) is water.
