Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Vienna ME ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Vienna ME hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Vienna ME ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Vienna ME hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Maine or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Vienna MEAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Vienna ME outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Vienna home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Vienna ME ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Vienna ME area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Vienna ME health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Vienna ME hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Vienna medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Maine healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Vienna ME residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Vienna ME area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
