While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in New Buffalo MI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

New Buffalo MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with New Buffalo MI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Michigan or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in New Buffalo MIAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local New Buffalo MI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your New Buffalo home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask New Buffalo MI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the New Buffalo MI area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous New Buffalo MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with New Buffalo MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the New Buffalo health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their New Buffalo MI residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the New Buffalo MI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
