Bassfield MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bassfield MS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Bassfield MS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Bassfield MS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Mississippi or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Bassfield MSAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Bassfield MS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Bassfield home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Bassfield MS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bassfield MS area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Bassfield MS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Bassfield MS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Bassfield health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Bassfield MS home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bassfield MS area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
