Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Bruce MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Bruce MS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Bruce MS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Bruce MS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Mississippi or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Bruce MSAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bruce MS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Bruce home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Bruce MS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Bruce MS area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Bruce MS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Bruce MS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Bruce health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Bruce MS residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bruce MS area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
