Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Carrollton MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Carrollton MS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Carrollton MS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Carrollton MS hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Mississippi or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Carrollton MSAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Carrollton MS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Carrollton home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Carrollton MS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Carrollton MS area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Carrollton MS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Carrollton MS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Carrollton health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Carrollton MS home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Carrollton MS area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Carrollton, Mississippi

Carrollton is a town in and the second county seat of Carroll County, Mississippi, United States, which is within the Mississippi Delta. The population was 190 at the 2010 census,[3] down from 408 in 2000. Centrally located in the county, the town is part of the Greenwood, Mississippi micropolitan area. The first county seat, Vaiden, Mississippi, was founded in the eastern part of the county during its early settlement.

The town was developed as the county seat and trading center for rural Carroll County, which was devoted to cotton agriculture and plantations in the antebellum era. After the Civil War, there was considerable violence against the newly emancipated freedmen, as whites worked to establish dominance.

In the period following Reconstruction, from 1877 to 1950, Carrollton County had 29 documented lynchings of African Americans, the second-highest number in the state after a total of 48 in nearby LeFlore County.[4] Twenty-five of these killings were committed in little more than a one-month period in the county seat of Carrollton from February through March 1886.[5] In general, lynchings were a means of white terrorist control of the African-American population.
