Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Grace MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Grace MS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Grace MS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Grace MS hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Mississippi or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Grace MSAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Grace MS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Grace home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Grace MS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Grace MS area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Grace MS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Grace MS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Grace health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Grace MS residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Grace MS area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
