Sonographer Job Summary

Greenville MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Greenville MS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Greenville MS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Greenville MS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Mississippi or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Greenville MSAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Greenville MS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Greenville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Greenville MS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Greenville MS area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Greenville MS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Greenville MS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Greenville healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Greenville MS residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Greenville MS area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Greenville, Mississippi

Greenville is a city in, and the county seat of, Washington County, Mississippi, United States.[3] The population was 34,400 at the 2010 census. It is located in the area of historic cotton plantations and culture known as the Mississippi Delta.

This area was occupied by indigenous peoples when explored by the French, who established a colony at Natchez, Mississippi, the home of the historic Natchez people, and later European-American colonists. The United States Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, and forced most of the Southeastern tribes to Indian Territory during the following decade.

Greenville was founded in 1824 by William W. Blanton, who filed for land from the United States government. He was granted section four, township eighteen, range eight west. This plot now constitutes most of downtown Greenville.
