Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Hernando MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Hernando MS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Hernando MS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Hernando MS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Mississippi or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Hernando MSAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Hernando MS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Hernando home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Hernando MS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Hernando MS area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Hernando MS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Hernando MS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Hernando medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Hernando MS home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hernando MS area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Hernando, Mississippi

Hernando is a city in and the county seat of DeSoto County, which is on the northwest border of Mississippi, United States.[3] The population was 14,090 at the 2010 census,[4] up from 6,812 in 2000. DeSoto County is the second-most-populous county in the Memphis metropolitan area, which includes counties in Tennessee and Mississippi.[3]

U.S. Route 51 and the I-55 freeway traverse the city from north to south, and the I-69 freeway crosses the city from east to west. The county courthouse is located within Hernando's historic downtown square. It is located at the intersection of Commerce Street and present-day U.S. 51.

At the time of encounters by French and Spanish colonists, the Chickasaw people had long inhabited this area. France had developed colonial settlements along the Gulf Coast, to the north on the middle Mississippi River in what was called the Illinois Country, and in New France (present-day Quebec in Canada). An 18th-century French colonial log house (see first photo in gallery below) in Hernando is a reminder of typical dwellings built in their settlements in the Illinois country, such as in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. The French and French Canadians had a wide trading network with various American Indian tribes along this river, for instance in Natchez.
