Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Inverness MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Inverness MS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Inverness MS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Inverness MS hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Mississippi or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Inverness MSAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Inverness MS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Inverness home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Inverness MS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Inverness MS area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Inverness MS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Inverness MS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Inverness healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Inverness MS home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Inverness MS area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
