Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Moss Point MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Moss Point MS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Moss Point MS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Moss Point MS hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Mississippi or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Moss Point MSAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Moss Point MS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Moss Point home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Moss Point MS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Moss Point MS area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Moss Point MS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Moss Point MS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Moss Point health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Moss Point MS home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Moss Point MS area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
