Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Newton MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Newton MS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Newton MS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Newton MS hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Mississippi or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Newton MSAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Newton MS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Newton home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Newton MS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Newton MS area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Newton MS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Newton MS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Newton healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Newton MS residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Newton MS area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
