Sonogram Tech Work Description

Okolona MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Okolona MS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Okolona MS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Okolona MS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Mississippi or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Okolona MSAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Okolona MS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Okolona home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Okolona MS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Okolona MS area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Okolona MS health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Okolona MS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Okolona healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Okolona MS home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Okolona MS area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Okolona, Mississippi

Okolona is a city in and one of the two county seats of Chickasaw County, Mississippi, United States.[4] It is located near the eastern border of the county. The population was 2,692 at the 2010 census.[2]

Okolona was named as Rose Hill in 1845 early in its settlement, but residents later discovered that another location had this name. When a US post office was established here in 1850, a new name was needed to avoid confusion in mail delivery. According to the Okolona Area Chamber of Commerce, Colonel Josiah N. Walton, postmaster of nearby Aberdeen, remembered an encounter with a Chickasaw warrior years earlier. The man's name was Oka-laua, meaning peaceful, yellow, or blue water. Walton renamed Rose Hill as Okolona in his honor.

Due to the destruction brought to the area by the Civil War, few structures from the antebellum period remain. The Elliot Donaldson House, constructed in 1850, survives and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. A few other homes have also survived.
