Sonographer Work Summary

Petal MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Petal MS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Petal MS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Petal MS hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Mississippi or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Petal MS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Petal home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Petal MS ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Petal MS area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Petal MS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Petal MS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Petal healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Petal MS home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Petal MS area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
