Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Port Gibson MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Port Gibson MS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Port Gibson MS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Port Gibson MS hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Mississippi or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Port Gibson MSAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Port Gibson MS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Port Gibson home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Port Gibson MS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Port Gibson MS area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Port Gibson MS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Port Gibson MS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Port Gibson health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Port Gibson MS home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Port Gibson MS area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
