Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Raleigh MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Raleigh MS clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Raleigh MS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Raleigh MS hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Mississippi or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Raleigh MSAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Raleigh MS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Raleigh home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Raleigh MS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Raleigh MS area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Raleigh MS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Raleigh MS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Raleigh healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Raleigh MS home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Raleigh MS area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Raleigh, Mississippi

Raleigh is a town in, and the county seat of, Smith County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,462 at the 2010 census, making it the largest town in Smith County.[3] Named for English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, Raleigh has been home to such Mississippians as Governor Robert Lowry, Governor/U.S. Senator Anselm McLaurin and pioneer William H. Hardy. [4]

Raleigh was first established as the community of Indian Springs and was renamed when the county seat was moved from Fairfield to Raleigh in 1834. The town of Raleigh and its citizens were very active in the Civil War; it was home to numerous companies of the Army of Mississippi and a training camp. In 1863, Raleigh was part of Grierson's Raid which played a major role in the defeat of the Confederate Army at Vicksburg.

The Smith County Courthouse is the major focal point of the town. Two earlier courthouses were destroyed in fires in the 1800s. The current court house was completed in 1912; but a leak in the roof caused the eventual loss of its signature dome. In 2005, a dedication service was held in honor of a new dome built as a replacement.
