Sonographer Occupation Description

Saucier MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Saucier MS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Saucier MS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Saucier MS hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Mississippi or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Saucier MSAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Saucier MS outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Saucier home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Saucier MS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Saucier MS area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Saucier MS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Saucier MS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Saucier health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Saucier MS residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Saucier MS area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
