You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Shannon MS area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Shannon MS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Shannon MS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Shannon medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Shannon MS home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Shannon MS area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

The town is named for Samuel Shannon, who purchased land at that location from Chickasaw Chief Itawamba in the early 1800s, then built a cabin and a farm. More settlers arrived following the Treaty of Pontotoc, which ceding Chickasaw land in exchange for financial compensation.[4]

The original townsite was north of the present location, and was moved when the Mobile and Ohio Railroad was constructed through the community in the 1850s. Shannon was incorporated in 1860 and a post office was established. Shannon was originally part of Itawamba County, but became part of Lee county after that county formed in 1866.[4]

From 1998 until 2007, Shannon was home to Rumors, the gay bar featured in the Kevin Smith/Malcolm Ingram film Small Town Gay Bar.[6] In 2013, after a hiatus, local businesspeople tried to reopen the bar. The town refused. This refusal led to a lawsuit claiming the town had refused the application out of concern of having a gay bar in its jurisdiction.[7]
