Sonogram Tech Job Description

Shuqualak MS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Shuqualak MS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Shuqualak MS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Shuqualak MS hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Mississippi or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Shuqualak MSAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Shuqualak MS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Shuqualak home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Shuqualak MS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Shuqualak MS area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Shuqualak MS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have associations with Shuqualak MS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Shuqualak healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Shuqualak MS home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Shuqualak MS area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
