Sonographer Job Summary

Hubbard NE ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Hubbard NE clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Hubbard NE ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Hubbard NE clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Nebraska or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Hubbard NEAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Hubbard NE hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Hubbard home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Hubbard NE ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hubbard NE area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Hubbard NE employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Hubbard NE hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Hubbard health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Nebraska healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Hubbard NE home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hubbard NE area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
