Sonogram Tech Work Description

Henderson NV ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Henderson NV clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Henderson NV ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Henderson NV hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Nevada or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Henderson NVAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Henderson NV hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Henderson home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Henderson NV ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Henderson NV area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Henderson NV health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Henderson NV hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Henderson medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Nevada healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Henderson NV residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Henderson NV area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

    Henderson, Nevada

Henderson, officially the City of Henderson, is a city in Clark County, Nevada, United States, about 16 miles (26 km) southeast of Las Vegas. It is the second-largest city in Nevada, after Las Vegas, with an estimated population of 302,539 in 2017.[3] The city is part of the Las Vegas metropolitan area, which spans the entire Las Vegas Valley. Henderson occupies the southeastern end of the valley, at an elevation of 1,864 feet (568 m).

The township of Henderson first emerged in the 1940s during World War II with the building of the Basic Magnesium Plant. Henderson quickly became the main supplier of magnesium in the United States, which was called the "miracle metal" of World War II.[4] The plant supplied the US War Department with magnesium for incendiary munition casings and airplane engines, frames, and other parts. A quarter of all US wartime magnesium came from the Henderson Plant to strengthen aluminum, using 25% of Hoover Dam's power to separate the metal from its ore by electrolysis.[5] Mayor Jim Gibson's grandfather, Fred D. Gibson, was one of the original engineers sent to Great Britain to learn the secret of creating the "miracle metal" which would help the United States and its allies win the war. The British liaison officer sent to Henderson, Major Charles Ball, had a street named after him. There was some concern "Ball St," would sound improper, so the street was named "Major Avenue".

Although "born in America's defense", Henderson's future after World War II was uncertain. In 1947, magnesium production was no longer necessary for defense, and most of BMI's 14,000 employees moved away. Enrollment in the school system was reduced by two thirds, and well over half the townsite houses, built to house plant workers, became vacant. In 1947, the United States War Asset Administration offered Henderson for sale as war surplus property.
