Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Manhattan NV ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Manhattan NV clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Manhattan NV ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Manhattan NV clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Nevada or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Manhattan NVAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Manhattan NV hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Manhattan home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Manhattan NV ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Manhattan NV area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Manhattan NV health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Manhattan NV clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Manhattan healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Nevada healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Manhattan NV residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Manhattan NV area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

It originally was founded in 1867 as part of the silver mining boom. George Wheeler found the district abandoned in 1871.[2] Then, in 1905, as part of the gold boom, "4,000 people flood(ed) into the region". The Nye and Ormsby County Bank, the only stone structure to be built in the town, was erected in 1906, but a decline followed the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the 1907 depression.[3]

The bank was forced to close. However, another boom in 1909 resulted in mining continuing into the late 1940s.[4] Major mining operations opened and operated through the 1970s to the 1990s, but production has recently scaled back significantly.[5]

The Big Smoky Valley is similar to many of the desert valleys in Nevada, characterized by flanking mountain ranges running north to south. Big Smoky Valley is bounded to the south by Lone Mountain, and the east and west by the Toquima and the Toiyabe ranges, respectively. The valley floor consists primarily of alluvial fans composed of small poorly sorted gravels.
