Sonographer Occupation Summary

Beach Haven NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Beach Haven NJ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Beach Haven NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Beach Haven NJ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Beach Haven NJAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Beach Haven NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Beach Haven home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Beach Haven NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Beach Haven NJ area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Beach Haven NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Beach Haven NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Beach Haven health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Beach Haven NJ home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Beach Haven NJ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
