Sonogram Tech Work Description

Farmingdale NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Farmingdale NJ hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Farmingdale NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Farmingdale NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Farmingdale NJAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Farmingdale NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Farmingdale home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with every sonographer school you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Farmingdale NJ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Farmingdale NJ area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Farmingdale NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Farmingdale NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Farmingdale healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Farmingdale NJ residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Farmingdale NJ area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
