Montville NJ sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Montville NJ, the next step is to start the procedure of choosing a college. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will provide the proper instruction to become a qualified professional. And given that some states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s very important that you investigate each college so that you can evaluate and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? A number of students will start by looking for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional significant factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and other qualifications will be covered more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online training options that are offered.

Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Montville NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Montville NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Montville NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Montville NJ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Montville NJAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Montville NJ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Montville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Montville NJ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Montville NJ area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Montville NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Montville NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Montville health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Montville NJ residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Montville NJ area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Montville, New Jersey

Montville is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 21,528,[9][10][11] reflecting an increase of 689 (+3.3%) from the 20,839 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 5,239 (+33.6%) from the 15,600 counted in the 1990 Census.[19]

In Money magazine's 2013 Best Places to Live rankings, Montville was ranked 13th in the nation, the second-highest among the three places in New Jersey included in the top 50 list.[22][23] The township was ranked 17th in the magazine's 2011 ranking of the "Best Places to Live", the highest-ranked place in New Jersey, after having been ranked 13th in 2007.[24][25] In 2009, Money magazine named Montville the 21st best place to live in the United States; the 2nd highest ranked community in New Jersey.[26]

The area now known as Montville Township was first settled by Dutch farmers from New Amsterdam (now part of New York City) in the very early 18th century. Part of New Netherland, the town was originally called "Uyle-Kill" (the Dutch spelling of "Owl-Kill"), a name given to the creek and valley, which ran through the area. By the 1740s, the settlement had grown in size and construction of the first road was begun. The early road, now known as U.S. Route 202, connected various farms with Montville's first gristmill, sawmill and tanneries. The Dutch Reformed Church was founded in Old Boonton in 1756 and moved to Montville in the early 1800s after land was purchased here for a parsonage.[27]
