Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Wallington NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Wallington NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Wallington NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Wallington NJ hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Wallington NJAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Wallington NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Wallington home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Wallington NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Wallington NJ area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Wallington NJ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Wallington NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Wallington health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Wallington NJ residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wallington NJ area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
