Sonographer Occupation Description

Cuervo NM ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Cuervo NM hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Cuervo NM ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Cuervo NM clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in New Mexico or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Cuervo NM hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Cuervo home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Cuervo NM area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Cuervo NM health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Cuervo NM hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Cuervo healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Cuervo NM home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cuervo NM area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

U.S. Route 66 in New Mexico

The historic U.S. Route 66 (US 66, Route 66) ran east–west across the central part of the state of New Mexico, along the path now taken by Interstate 40 (I-40). However, until 1937, it took a longer route via Los Lunas, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe, now roughly New Mexico State Road 6 (NM 6), I-25, and US 84. Large portions of the old road parallel to I-40 have been designated NM 117, NM 118, NM 122, NM 124, NM 333, three separate loops of I-40 Business, and state-maintained frontage roads.

Route 66 in New Mexico was marked over portions of two auto trails — the National Old Trails Road from Arizona via Albuquerque and Santa Fe to just shy of Las Vegas, and one of the main routes of the Ozark Trails network from that point into Texas.[3] The state had taken over maintenance of these roads under several numbers: NM 6 from Arizona to Los Lunas, part of NM 1 through Albuquerque and Santa Fe to near Las Vegas, NM 56 to Santa Rosa, the short NM 104 to Cuervo, and part of NM 3 to Texas. While NM 56 and NM 104 were completely absorbed by US 66, NM 6 was reassigned to a route splitting from US 66 (old NM 6) at Laguna and heading straight east through Albuquerque, Moriarty, and Palma to US 66 at Santa Rosa. Except between Albuquerque and Moriarty, where it formed part of US 470, this was an unimproved road.[4][5][6]

New Mexico had long been controlled politically by the Santa Fe Ring, a group of businesspeople and officials with close ties to the Republican Party. In 1924, Democrat Arthur Thomas Hannett was unexpectedly elected for a single term (1925–1927) as governor, only to be defeated with various dirty tricks in the next election. Blaming the Republican establishment in Santa Fe for his defeat, Hannett used the lame duck remainder of his term to force through a sixty-nine mile cutoff from Santa Rosa directly to Albuquerque, bypassing Santa Fe entirely. The hastily constructed new road opened January 3, 1927, while incoming governor Richard Dillon was still trying to get construction stopped.[7] Dillon was replaced by Arthur Seligman, a Democrat, in 1931.
