Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Cadyville NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Cadyville NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Cadyville NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Cadyville NY clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in New York or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Cadyville NYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Cadyville NY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Cadyville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Cadyville NY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Cadyville NY area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Cadyville NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Cadyville NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Cadyville medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Cadyville NY residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cadyville NY area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    New York State Route 374

New York State Route 374 (NY 374) is a state highway in the North Country of New York in the United States. The route follows a generally northwest to southeast progression; however, the portion of the route within Franklin County runs north–south and is signed in the same manner. The western terminus of NY 374 is at a junction with U.S. Route 11 in the village of Chateaugay. Its eastern terminus is at an intersection with NY 22 north of the city of Plattsburgh.

Most of the alignment of NY 374 is located in the Adirondack Park, heading along the shorelines of several large lakes in the northern part of the park, including the two Chateaugay Lakes and Chazy Lake. The route serves as the major road in the area of the Adirondacks for most of its length, and as a major arterial in the city of Plattsburgh itself. NY 374 was assigned in the 1930 state route renumbering from NY 3 in Cadyville to the state line. It was extended eastward to NY 22 in Plattsburgh in the 1970s following the completion of an arterial bypassing northern Plattsburgh. Until 2017,[citation needed] NY 374's western terminus was at the Canada–United States border north of the village of Chateaugay, where the road continued north as a local road. This route is now maintained by Franklin County and designated as County Route 52.

NY 374 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 11 (US 11, named Main Street), where it follows Depot Street[3] and becomes maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT).[4] The route continues southward out of Chateaugay and back into the local forests and fields, where it passes to the east of High Falls Park. At the intersection with Pulpmill Road, NY 374 continues to the southeast, losing any sight of development around the highway. The route parallels Healey Road and intersects with Number Five Road, where the highway moves around in different directions. The route continues along the Chateaugay River and into Brainardsville, where it intersects with NY 190 (Military Turnpike) and CR 24 (Brainardsville Road). The route leaves Brainardsville shortly after the intersection with Reynolds Road.[3]
