Selma NC sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Selma NC, it’s time to start the process of picking a school. First, you need to find the right program that will provide the necessary instruction to become a qualified professional. So it’s extremely important that you research each college so that you can assess and compare your choices. But just where does one begin? A number of prospective students will begin by searching for schools that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors also. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in depth later in this article. But to start with, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are offered.

Sonographer Occupation Summary

Selma NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Selma NC hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Selma NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Selma NC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in North Carolina or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Selma NCAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Selma NC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Selma home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Selma NC ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Selma NC area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Selma NC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have associations with Selma NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Selma medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Selma NC home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Selma NC area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
