Sonogram Tech Job Description

Plaza ND ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Plaza ND hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Plaza ND ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Plaza ND hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in North Dakota or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Plaza NDAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Plaza ND outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Plaza home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with every sonography college you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Plaza ND ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Plaza ND area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Plaza ND employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Plaza ND clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Plaza medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with North Dakota healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Plaza ND home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Plaza ND area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
