Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Duncan OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Duncan OK hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Duncan OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Duncan OK clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Oklahoma or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Duncan OKAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Duncan OK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Duncan home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Duncan OK ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Duncan OK area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Duncan OK employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Duncan OK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Duncan medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Duncan OK residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Duncan OK area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Duncan, Oklahoma

The Chisholm Trail passed to the east of Duncan prior to the town's founding.[4] An estimated 9,800,000 Longhorn cattle were herded up the trail between Texas and Abilene, Kansas during its existence. After learning that an extension of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad was being built from Kansas to Texas, Scotsman William Duncan brought his wife, parents, and other relatives and created a trading post situated at the intersection of the north-south Chisholm Trail and the east-west military passage between Fort Arbuckle and Fort Sill. The first train arrived on June 27, 1892; that date is considered the official birth date of the town.

Centrally located in Stephens County, Duncan became the county seat after Oklahoma achieved statehood in 1907.[4] As a compromise between residents of the northern and southern parts of the county, the county courthouse was located in the middle of Duncan's Main Street, half of it in the northern part of the city and county and half in the southern. Main Street made a wide circle around it on both ends.

Oil wells opened in Stephens County in 1918 and led to rapid development in Duncan.[4] Shacks were prohibited immediately following the opening of the wells and other regulations were also put in place to channel the growth in an organized manner.[4]
