So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Newport OR outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Newport home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonography school you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Newport OR area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Newport OR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Newport OR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Newport medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Oregon healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Newport OR home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Newport OR area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
